Another Curveball for SEO as Google Experiments With AI-First Queries
GOOGLE’S AI MODE TEST SHIFTS MORE SEARCH ACTIVITY INTO CHATBOT FLOWS
Google is running a global mobile test that lets users jump straight from an AI Overview in Search into the platform’s AI Mode chatbot, tightening the link between traditional search and conversational queries.
The test introduces an “Ask anything” prompt beneath expanded AI results; tapping it moves the user out of standard SERPs and into a chatbot window for follow-up questions. Google says the goal is a more intuitive, conversational search experience, but the shift also risks reducing organic click-throughs as users receive more complete answers without leaving Google’s environment.
Early independent studies suggest AI summaries suppress referral clicks, but Google maintains overall click volume has remained steady and claims “quality clicks” have even increased due to stronger pre-click context. For marketers and SEO teams, the experiment adds yet another variable to an already volatile search landscape, reinforcing the need to adapt as Google reshapes how information is discovered and consumed.
