What Human-In-The-Loop Looks Like In Content Marketing

Published on August 10, 2026

Human-in-the-loop is one of the most used phrases in AI content strategy right now. Writing in her Contentment newsletter, Tracey Wallace, Director of Content Strategy at Klaviyo, puts some substance behind it, sharing exactly where her team draws the line between what AI handles and what humans own.

Wallace identifies five points where humans are not just in the loop but driving it:

  • Briefing: the brief becomes the prompt, and getting it right determines everything downstream
  • Skill building and maintenance: AI requires ongoing teaching and iteration to know what to do
  • Asset review: a human checks that content reads well, aligns to goals, and is accurate
  • Line editing: a crucial source of skill maintenance as editors catch what the automation consistently misses
  • Publishing: AI can stage content to a CMS, but a human makes the final call on whether it goes live

The workflow looks like this:

This maps where automation handles the work, reading the brief, drafting, validating, staging to CMS, and closing the loop, and where human review and final publish approval gate every piece before it reaches an audience.
