First Interstate Bank Spot Skewers Banking Clichés

First Interstate Bank has launched No Nonsense Banking, its first campaign from TDA Boulder, rolling out across 10 states through the end of the year. The Billings, Montana-headquartered bank is the primary subsidiary of First Interstate BancSystem and has appointed TDA Boulder as agency of record for the work.

The campaign is built around a single positioning: people have no patience for nonsense, and neither does First Interstate. The creative does not claim to reinvent banking but argues for a return to basics, straight answers, human relationships, and tools that work.

The hero spot, Every Step, opens on a couple's biggest life moments: a marriage proposal, a first child, learning to drive, packing up for college. Their banker is present for all of it, physically in the frame, which starts as a subversion of the banking industry cliché of being with customers every step of the way. The spot lands on a deliberate reversal: First Interstate is not promising to be there for every step, just the ones that matter, with a straight answer and a real person on the other end. Accompanying spots Actor, Handshake, and Keys carry the same point of view.

The out-of-home component runs in towns most major banks skip. Headlines written for those communities include "The only B.S. out here comes from cattle," "Because banking should be out in the open," and "Out here, nonsense doesn't last long." The media mix covers audio, CTV, digital display, high-impact rich media, out-of-home, social, and search.
