X Clips Operation Bluebird’s Wings For Good
X has updated its Terms of Service to explicitly reassert ownership of the Twitter name, trademarks, and bluebird logo, moving quickly to block an effort to resurrect the old brand. The change follows a petition from a startup called 'Operation Bluebird', which argued that X had abandoned the Twitter trademarks by no longer using them.
For marketers, the dispute highlights how legacy brand equity can remain strategically valuable long after a rebrand, especially when cultural attachment still runs deep. X’s revised terms, effective January 15, 2026, now explicitly bar any use of both the X and Twitter names or associated marks without written consent.
In parallel, X has launched a countersuit reinforcing its claim to exclusive ownership of the Twitter and Tweet trademarks. The swift legal response signals that X views the former Twitter brand not as discarded baggage, but as protected intellectual property worth defending. With Operation Bluebird’s site now offline, any revival of Twitter appears unlikely.
