Meta’s AI Bot Push Blurs the Line Between Social and Simulation

The latest rollout includes access to "AI Studio," allowing users to chat with AI characters or create their own bots with distinct personalities and traits. These AI personas will eventually receive voices and public-facing profiles, posting and interacting like real users.

While Meta claims the aim is to boost engagement, the blurred lines between authentic and artificial interaction raise new ethical and psychological questions. Millions of these bots could soon fill comment sections, sparking debate about transparency and digital identity. Instagram and Messenger now allow in-app bot creation, with Instagram embedding the feature directly into its "Create" tools.

AI responses are already common across platforms, but the move toward AI-generated users is a step change. Critics warn of the risk to mental health, as users may unknowingly engage with simulations rather than real people. The initiative echoes past concerns around engagement-at-all-costs models that fueled algorithm-driven social media addiction. 

While AI integration has shown promising results, some analysts caution that the long-term impact on ad revenue growth remains uncertain. They suggest that while initial gains are evident, sustained growth will depend on continuous innovation and adaptation to evolving market dynamics.
