Facebook Rewinds the Clock with Friends Tab But Keeps Algorithm Running
Snapshot: Meta is reintroducing a dedicated Friends tab on Facebook, designed to show only content from users’ actual connections—no suggested posts, groups, or ads. The tab, rolling out in the US and Canada, includes stories, Reels, updates, and birthdays from friends, aiming to restore the “magic of friendship” that once defined the platform.
This move responds to growing user fatigue with algorithm-heavy feeds, giving people a cleaner, more personal view of their network. Despite this nostalgic push, Meta isn’t walking away from algorithmic content: its main feed and new Explore and Local tabs will continue to surface AI-driven recommendations. The Friends tab replaces the former space for friend suggestions and requests, which have been moved elsewhere in the app. It’s part of a broader campaign by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to revive “OG” Facebook experiences, with more legacy features promised throughout the year. The company says the move reflects a desire to rebalance user experience without sacrificing engagement.
Still, critics may view it as a calculated way to offer the illusion of control while doubling down on personalized content elsewhere. Users can access and customize the tab in their app settings, with an option to pin it for easier navigation. While the Friends tab may not signal a full-scale reversal, it’s a notable step in Meta’s strategy to retain longtime users who increasingly miss the social network’s original charm.
