London Event Recap: Financial Comms Leaders Confront Global Trust Gap

Published on June 18, 2025

On June 3, Financial Narrative hosted its latest European breakfast event, Rebuilding Trust: Navigating a New Communications World Order, bringing together senior communications leaders at Vested UK in London. Against a backdrop of rising scrutiny, geopolitical risk, and digital acceleration, the group dug into what it really takes to lead communications at the highest level—sharing unfiltered lessons on influence, resilience, and reputation under pressure.

Moderated by Ashley Jones, Head of Financial Narrative, the panel featured Fiona Beukes, SVP of Global Communications, Content and Client at Citi; George Hutchinson, CEO and Founder of River Effra; and Jason Groves, International Director of External Affairs and Media Relations at Marsh McLennan.

The discussion tackled the escalating challenge of earning and sustaining trust in a communications environment marked by geopolitical tension, societal polarization, and "a fragmented media landscape". From prepping executives for pressurised public scrutiny to crafting consistent global narratives, panelists explored how financial institutions learn to speak with integrity, act with foresight, and lead with purpose—even when the ground is shifting beneath them.

Reframing trust for a polarized, fast-moving world

A recent gathering of senior financial communications leaders in London explored the evolving challenge of trust in a landscape marked by polarization, misinformation, and global instability. Participants unpacked how communications professionals can navigate increasing public skepticism, shifting geopolitical norms, and accelerating technology—all while maintaining credibility. Three themes emerged with uncommon clarity: the importance of knowing where trust matters most to your audience, the importance of institutional consistency, and the need for calm preparedness before crisis hits.

Leading institutions should focus on building trust where it matters most—security of funds, data protection, and transparent decision-making—rather than trying to appear flawless on every front. This approach builds authenticity and strengthens a firm’s voice where it counts.

The conversation highlighted how credibility today is not just earned through words, but through demonstrable action. Innovation—especially through AI and data—can bolster trust when it directly improves client outcomes. But such innovation, whilst a useful tool when used appropriately with a client focus, can also be manipulated, and is limited by only drawing on what is already known.

Participants underscored that regional tailoring must never come at the cost of institutional coherence. As some buzzwords lose currency or become politicized, the values behind them must be carried forward through example, not rhetoric. While language and nuance may shift depending on the audience, brands should beware of saying one thing in one region and another elsewhere. Consistent global messaging is key.
