Future Proof Festival 2026: Spotlight on Financial Marketing
Future Proof Festival marked its fifth anniversary this September in Huntington Beach, and founder Matt Middleton framed the milestone around five themes his team built after more than 250 conversations with wealth management leaders. For the marcomms crowd on the ground, the story was as much about how the event itself was built and run as it was about what was said on stage.
A festival built on feedback, not formula
Middleton has described his role less as founder and more as steward, and the format backs that up. Rather than recycling a standard conference template, Future Proof rebuilds its themes every year from direct conversations with the industry, then hands the format over to the attendees to fill in. The team also spent the past year building out Future Proof Citywide, now the largest AI-focused finance event, a sign of how quickly the organizers are willing to spin up new formats when they see where attention is heading.
That same instinct showed up in how sponsors approached their own presence. Booths ranged from modest, low-key setups to full activations stretching across a chunk of the boardwalk, and more than one team leaned on AI tools this year to help design layouts and visuals before refining them by hand on site. Swag ran the same spectrum, from novelty items attendees could stash in a bag and bring home, to higher-end gifts reserved for scheduled client meetings. At least one exhibitor ran an AI photo booth that dropped attendees onto a virtual surfboard, which says something about where activation budgets are going this year.
Marketing got its own track
Future Proof has always leaned advisor-first, but this year's programming carved out real space for marketers specifically. Intention.ly's CMO Collective ran two full panels on day two, covering credibility building through PR and client reviews, and separately, growth tactics spanning AI adoption, segmentation, and video. [Read our recap of both panels here.] The existence of a dedicated marketing track inside an advisor-heavy festival is itself a signal: the conversations happening in wealth management marketing right now are substantial enough to warrant their own room, separate from the main stage.
What it means for marcomms teams
The through-line across both the stage content and the ground-level activity was consistency of message. Firms that showed up with a clear point of view, whether in their booth design, their swag choices, or their panel appearances, stood out more than firms that showed up simply to be present. Middleton's own framing captures the tension well: growth without gimmicks, built on specialization and content that compounds rather than one-off tactics.
For an FNN audience specifically, the festival offered a rare density of peer conversation. Marketers who spend most of the year inside their own firm's silo got several days of comparing notes with counterparts running the same kinds of programs at competing institutions, often more collaboratively than competitively. That dynamic, more than any single stage talk, may be what keeps drawing this audience back year after year.
